It’s good to see some concrete improvement in the economy: Literally, improvement in concrete.

Fischer’s Concrete Service has finished a new plant on Route DD east of Warrensburg.

“We’ve been busy in Warrensburg with Whiteman Air Force Base and the University of Central Missouri,” Fischer said in a telephone interview.

The plant was built in phases.

“We brought in a portable plant and kept that running while we tore the old one down,” Fischer said.

The previous plant was built in 1988. Fischer said that while a plant of that age could be sufficient, “It depends on the size of the market.” He said growth demanded a newer plant, especially from the base in Knob Noster and for work at the university in Warrensburg.

The plant has a new batching system, four aggregate bins, two conveyors, a cement silo and electrical and plumbing upgrades. It has double the capacity of the old plant, at 150 yards per hour.

Fischer said the plant cost between $400,000 and $500,000 to build.

How has business been for Fischer?

“It’s been OK,” he said. “We’re very fortunate to have had work from ProEnergy Services and highway and bridge work,” he said.

Fischer said the new plant employs about 10 people; Fischer Concrete has about 100 employees, he said. His father, Jack, started the business with Joe’s uncle, Arnold, in 1955. Joe went to work for the company in 1987.

Joe Fischer has been in the news lately for his charitable work.

In December, Fischer Concrete donated $20,000 to The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri.

This month, the company offered a $1,000 scholarship for a student in the Building Materials Merchandising program at State Fair Community College.

Ironically, Fischer did not go to State Fair. Instead, he says he graduated from Central Missouri State University (now the University of Central Missouri) in 1981. Nonetheless, “Sedalia’s been very good to me,” he said of his charity work, “and I wanted to give back.”

Fischer’s Concrete Service is at 2300 Clinton Road in Sedalia. Its phone number is 826-3122.
